How to Install and Use an Action Pack

In this quick tutorial I will show you how to Install and Use an Action Pack in Adobe Photoshop. The first step to install an action pack is to download it to your computer desktop. Many want to double-click the action file on the desktop, but don’t do it! This may work for a while, but it doesn’t keep the actions from disappearing from your computer. Instead, open up Photoshop and I’ll teach you the steps to load the action set directly into Photoshop – which will keep it on your computer.

1. Make sure your ‘Actions’ palette is open. If it isn’t, hit Alt + F9 or go to Window > Actions.

2. Click on the ‘fly out menu’, (the icon with an arrow to the left and three little lines), located on the top right of the ‘Actions’ palette and scroll down to ‘load actions’. This will pop open a window for you to browse to the set you’d like to load into Photoshop.

3. Select the action file you saved on your desktop and click the ‘Load’ button. Now the action pack should be loaded into the Actions palette – ready to use on your photos.

Using the Actions

1. Open the Action Pack if it is minimized to see all the different actions within the set. Expand the set by clicking the arrow next to the folder.

2. Highlight the specific action title that you want to use.

3. Click the ‘play’ icon. This will run through the action very quickly and tell you any information in a message dialog box if you need to do anything.
Adjust the opacity of the photo layers to taste for each action. Each photo will have different results, so try them on all types of photos. Feel free to mix and match actions and add one on top of another!

In this episode I will take you through the creation of the image FREEDOM from start to finish. This is our longest tutorial to date coming in at just over 1 hour and 30 minutes long. We supply you with the images and links to stock images so you can follow along. This tutorial will cover many techniques from basic colour adjustment’s to extraction of subjects from the backgrounds.

The image was inspired by the works of Michal Karcz. His image Ultima Thule is the original image that inspired me to create FREEDOM. Please take a moment and visit his website and take a look at his work, it’s awesome!

Additionally we used two plugins from Nik software called HDR Efex Pro 2 and Color Efex Pro 4, you don’t need the plugins to follow along.
